What's with this really crappy blur effect?
Its a blur requested by the animator.

It's a bit of a shame. I think this scene would be even better.
gaussian blur is an important tool for animation in the post-cel era and it's used well here

I don't know, I respect your opinion but I think this sequence would be more pleasing with actual smears but it's still good fight animation.
I take that back. the blur isn't REALLY CRAPPY, its just distracts from the rock solid choreography. Also, presumed? This early version of Fruits Basket was by Studio Deen. Did Matsushima a regular there or were they contracted? I don't really know that much about the anime industry or how it works, so some help would REALLY be appreciated. Also on a lighter note,

There are actual smears in this cut. The frame tool really helps here.
Matsushima was an employee of Studio JEC-E, which was a common subcontracting studio. It's why his career at this time had seemingly random stops including the stint with Naruto.

Now that I looked at it, there are smears, just blocked a bit by blurs but they're still here. Thanks for clarifying.
Besides, I don't hate blurs and they can be used well.

Oh definitely. Also, you're welcome.

Maybe Matsushima did animate this cut using a pen name, since apparently that is a common thing in the industry.
