I was always curious about this episode, and I have heard various explanations of why it looked so visually different from the rest of the show, but I've learned that trying to learn about the production of anime through youtube comments is...ill-advised. With that, I'm wondering if anyone here knows what led to the visual differences in this episode.

This episode was directed by the late Osamu Kobayashi. He's an industry legend that has directed many memorable series, episodes, OP/EDs across his career.
