The shot of the dragon at 0:44 took my breath away the first time I saw it in theaters. So much complex movement and detail.
The camera rotating is sudden, but it somehow sells the jump over the claw that didn't make sense in the genga

They are indeed hand-drawn in this scene, courtesy of master Inoue Toshiyuki. Later in the movie they are CG, though, for example in the royal parade scene.
According to the interview with Inoue in the Blu-Ray Special Booklet, he drew the Renato crashing into the lake and the chase in the tower all in 2 weeks.
