what drawing skill does he use? does he use construction drawing? cuz that sure looked like he used the construction method for the poses. And also, there are those x's on spaces not drawing what do they represent.

So when we learn animation, one of the things we learn is the secret to stronger Illustration. As an animator myself, I've learned that construction has it's place (and nakamura sometimes does it, even here) But he also carries a strong sense of form, gesture, and posing. that one would get from having

1: A vast visual library
2: a metric ton of life-drawing experience.
3: Learning to draw in pen and being confident with permanence.

Construction is nice, but learning the ins and outs of every curve on the body goes a long way too. Sometimes artists who learn too hard on construction have really stiff art. Knowing when to construct and knowing when to let the flow come out is the balance. If you're wondering about Gesture drawing a trick is to do Croquis. They're really fast sketches of models or objects. You dont have time to detail them, it's all about quickly spotting the form, and capturing the shillouette. Have any model hold a pose for 20 seconds - draw it. change pose, and repeat. if 20 is too short, start at 50 seconds and work your way down to 5.

And the Xs far as I can tell are just written camera instructions. There's a border on the image thats the frame of animation paper. He will write an X to move the paper when doing a pencil test and put it back into place.
