0:05 I think this was modeled after some of that old nuclear test footage from the 50’s where a fake town is destroyed by a nuclear blast.

I don't think Mitsuo Iso will ever needed a miniature model to animate that cut. Enough reference footage of that nuclear bomb test footage is enough to animate that cut by using his well-known Full Limited animation skills. He even animated that iconic Asuka VS. Eva Series fight scene like it's nothing.
