There is a lot of stop-and-start movement in this film (this cut especially so), I don't really know how I feel about it. It's cool, but it's also a bit distracting at times.

Its a very visualy pleasing and "dynamic" way of shooting stuff in fights like this (also i guess saves cost/time/drawing count in the KA ) and with Ufo's polish it always works in each instance/cut when viewed in its own. Now overall if there are like 2 dozen instances of it in a single fight it starts to weight it down, become repetative and take away from the immersion i agree
I think 0:55-end is someone else, timing changes and there's a lot less emphasis on stop-and-start 1s movements and effects mentionned above
yoshiyuki ohkubo should be in either this or post #150130 somewhere

I noticed that as well. I think the intention is to show how impossibly fast the two are moving by slowing down, then instantly moving to the next blow. There is a nice satisfaction to it but I agree that smoother movement could have been even better.
The sense of speed and choreography is incredible.
My favorite part is how Saber's eyes and body are moving as she is adjusting to where Rider will attack
0:00 - 0:53: Shun Yamaoka (presumed)
0:54 - end: Yoshiyuki Okubo
Is the background at 0:51 cgi?

Amazing. I rarely ever see bg animation with that level of stability, especially in a really slow rotating shot like that
I love the punchy action
