Wow, I assumed that Imai had roughed in vague areas for the background so that he could figure out points for Eren to grapple to and then the CG artists followed that guideline, but this is even more impressive. He's just having Eren grapple onto nothing with no surroundings and still there is such a sense of momentum and speed being conveyed.

the backgrounds are there in the layout phase, they're later removed for the genga process because the movement is already fixed by that point, so only the hand-drawn portion needs to be cleaned
