Great 2D animation but horrible 3D background. At this point it shouldn’t be surprising that an amazing sakuga scene gets damaged by Mappa compositing.

Every anime of Mappa has this awful compositing?

Huh no.

Nah AOT has good compositing.

AOT has really bad compositing. Look at the CGI forest during Levi vs Beast titan. And of course the horrible blur and grainy filters used in it. Idk if you're talking about seasons 1-3 which had great compositing, but those were done by wit.

Wit had the wherewithal to hire Asahi Production to do the compositing of their seasons. MAPPA used Raretrick, who I think is considered one of the lesser studios out there, to do the compositing for AoT's 4th season.

I knew about wit but I thought MAPPA did most of the compositing in house? For example the last episode of jjk was apparently entirely done in-house. Also can you give me a good source to get info about compositing teams? I'd love to know the team that did the composting for JJK openings (I know it's mostly Yamashita magic but still), AOT final season PV etc.

AOT, they chose to do outsourcing, since I guess they didn't have a DOP ready or available, and plus, one good thing that Asakawa has is that he's excellent when it comes to handling 3d blending, actually industry leading in terms of his blend. It's other aspects where his work as a DOP falls through, but for aot, I think his good 3d Blend is good enough.

3D Backgrounds being bad doesn't equal composite being bad

3D backgrounds is on the person doing the backgrounds, which is outsourced to another company. Jeong Ryeon Kim, who did the backgrounds for Danmachi, had to do the backgrounds for JJK, and it sucked.

Not saying that Teppei Itoh didn't need time to improve from his work on JJK, but still, this is not on MAPPA for the bad backgrounds.

A lot of MAPPA's titles outsource composite. Some have enough foresight to give Asahi Pro some of the work, other times though, we're stuck with Raretrick or another studio, and give Asahi animation and paint duties. And tbh, MAPPA's own inhouse efforts aren't too hot a lot of the time.

Just makes me happier that not only did Ito improve significantly from then to now - although the quality of the composite is also on part to Gosso's instructions, I suppose -, but that Higashi is replacing Kim as Art Director.
