Worth noting that Takuro Naka is also credited and I don't see what he could have handled so there's a possibility they both handled the fireworks plane parts. Still for now only tagging the plane nerd since I'm 100% sure they worked on that part.

I'm curious to know how the effects were done here, seems to be a mix of 2D and CGI or something similar.

The plane certainly feels like it's rotoscoped CG when it does that roll in the first cut. I think the actual effects themselves are particles.

There's a possibility they used cgi reference (not sure rotoscoped can be used for CGI) but Oono having drawn a fair share of planes, I would be inclined to believe that it wasn't traced.

Indeed they are particles but I'm thinking that there might have been a 2D reference given that the timing feels kinda 2D in a way. Here's hoping the producer talks about the process on twitter.

Well it feels like it was traced, at least in my opinion. It may very well not have been.
