most underrated animator?
considering the flak that his TTGL episode received, I would say that's a fair statement

And honestly that to me is the proof that sometimes the mere big number of adherents doesn't make a opinion more valid. Episode 4 of TTGL (hoping it's the one you're referring to and I'm not shooting the wrong direction xD) had a quite different art and animation style from the general vibe of the show. I didn't like it super much myself, but I honestly don't think it was hideous at all, but quite different. In this case it was quite a artistically driven decision (if I understood well, the team liked the limited animation style and wanted to insert it in the show). To be honest, and it pains me to say, if I must point out a place and time where Kobayashi really messed up is... sigh... Dororo 2019... a series I even liked a lot :| I'm not bragging to be a great expert or whatnot, I'm just a random guy passing by the streets of internet and sticking the head inside this site's window to throw a opinion (and sometimes drawing some terrible doodle and doing some terrible gif) so.... but I really can't believe that kind of animation thrown in that episode was a artistic radical and different vision on animation... felt really really really more like terrible time and production issues :| (the fire giant moth scene tbh looks awesome, but it's like 10 seconds xD). BUT! That time aside, I honestly think he and his style should get more trust and less flaming :| (and this to me looks awesome, besides all my mumbojumbo reasoning xD)

Don't forget episode 15 of Dororo.

But Dororo was plagued with production issues for most of its run like most MAPPA shows. You could see it in the art. I think Kobayashi just got unlucky and his episode happened to be the one that got the worst of it. His Kemonozume episode looked great, for example.

No.

I'd argue the MAPPA-helmed episodes managed to cope with it a little bit better than the Tezuka Pro ones because they had more resources than the latter party. And 15 was done by Tezuka Pro (coincidentally, they stopped animating the series after that point, maybe they got kicked off of animation duties because of production woes involving that episode?)

Production cooperation for ep 15 was MAPPA. What is this thread. Stop spreading misinformation
Am I wrong in saying that a not insignificant number of Dororo's episodes were really rough? Or that MAPPA productions can sometimes really chug near the end of their runs?

Spectacularly wrong. Dororo's one of their strongest productions, with the last cour in particular being pretty damn fantastic, especially from episode 18 onwards.

Lotta misinformation in this comment section, so let me attempt to put a stop to it by putting my mod hat on and reminding you all that this isn't the forum section of this site, and any extended discussion that doesn't actively pertain to the post should go over there.

Thanks~
Sorry, I'll fact-check more in the future before I take to the keyboard

Sorry, I was pretty sure Tezuka Pro co-produced the animation for episode 15, did they actually not do any of the episodes? Or were they removed earlier than that?

Tezuka Productions is credited with episodes: 3, 4, 7, 9, 11, 13, 14 (joint), 17.

They were not removed or "kicked" from the production, it was just always planned to be that way. This is determined in pre-production stages, happening many months in advance before any animation is even started, it's not a week-to-week decision.
