shouldn't it have the "background animation" tag in 0.20 to 0.21?
I knew this was Nagata! Pretty wild to see this level of modern smears and crazy camera movement in Madoka. He knocked it out of the park. I bet we'll get to see him do something even better in the new movie.
The comments got refeshed so i'll repeat.

This is God.
Very reminiscent of Nakamura’s style, extremely impressive the talents some of these younger animators have.
I want to see Nagata and Ryuuki Hashimoto together at one point, they both have a similar shading style and wonderful smeary movement

That's a good point. They would make a great pair.
The houseki-esque hair at the beginning isn’t getting much recognition, lol. The cape’s fluid flapping was profound. And just like FierceAlchemist said, it was a treat seeing such dynamic choreography throughout her aerial maneuver. Excellent as always, Nagata-sensei.
This dude is proving himself to be one of the greatest animators of the post-webgen era so far.
Not his most readable work but respect to the insane drawings on display
where did the unghosted ver come from?
I don't want to sound insulting, but I really don't understand what's the appeal behind this type of animation/sakuga ? It's cool, but I literally can't tell what's going on half of the time, and it just breaks my immersion/enjoyment.

I've never had this problem, just pay attention, it works very well for me at least

I tend to get the same impression for a lot of modern action animation. As other comments pointed out, I think it's largely bc action animators today really want to create a kind of sensory overload, with a lot of impressive techniques like impact frames and very complex layouts that tend to obscure what's actually going on. It's impressive when you see it, but if you have a more analytical mindset I get that it can be kinda frustrating.

I have to say however that I don't feel that from that specific sequence. It's not that Nagata doesn't lean in that tendency, but he tends to put a lot of work in the details (things like the shading or the smears) so I feel it's actually rewarding to go through it again and again, not just to get what's going on but to spot all these little cool things.

i generally feel this way about a lot of modern action animation as well

imo it's hard to toe the line between depicting superhuman movement and coming out with an overly flashy scene that feels weightless or messy, but it's mostly a matter of taste

what makes this one work for me is nagata's rhythm and strong artwork/shading
PERFECT

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOw

nagata's fabric shading always reminded me of yutaka's

the difference is that
IMO,nagata CAN actually do this style right
I found nagata's style to be
complex ,immersive and rhythmic
Nagata's shading is always so unique. Actual god, hope we see more of them in the future.
What a satisfying animation

Nagata is GOD

100% agree with you. I saw this clip on twitter and came straight here to comment the same thing. It's flashy, it's stylish and technically impressive but it's a narrative *mess*! I mostly blame contemporary action directors for this, not the KAs after all. It's all things coming straight at you on camera, reminds me of the 2010s 3D crazy gimmicks
