It is surprising to see the great skills with which You Yoshinari joined Gainax, even as a rookie

Its funny reading interviews about his work on Eva being all "I was still a noob, Honda san was a god compared to me" and then see these absolutely brilliant cuts he put out for the show. (Sorry accidentally deleted it lol)
why did they turn all the eva animation like this into cgi in the rebuilds?

My guess for this specific cut (and others) is that they didn't want to just recreate the same exact version as with the show technicaly and production wise (for the rebuilds that cover the same material to have a purpose of existing after all)

So they had the base of this scene being 2d (the mecha Silluettes and running) which then went through many cg modification phases. You can see the process in the production materials of 2.22

seriously speaking, I doubt this is the case. I think the first rebuild being a 1:1 copy/paste (and some scenes in this movie) means Anno doesn't pay mind to things being the same as the original series. Perhaps he thought cgi could convay the movement he wanted better than the 2d layout.

I agree, I think Anno was going for more exaggerated movements, which was much more doable with cgi.

Yeah What I meant was that Anno wanted to portray the exact same scene 1-1 layout and storyboarding wise but he wanted it made and produced with a different approach and pipeline due to tech improvement and change in experimentation to try and highlight different aspects .
the way the last cut is timed reminds me a bit of masuo (?) and i don't think I've seen otonari do this type of slow timing before, his other explosions on the show seem to be "snappier". The overall shape also gives me more of a masuo vibe (?) and Masuo was also credited on the ep. (Unless this whole clip's been confirmed, if so whoops)

Edit: Nevermind, just saw this (https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/17089)
